It’s now almost history! A battle took place between two formats once again in the digital world and a champion emerged – Blu-ray! Back in the year 2002 – ish, a fight for world dominance was hard and fast between Blu-ray and its then competitor HD DVD. It was actually just like the battle between VHS and Betamax some time before.
Now that Blu-ray has well and truly won out, we must ask ourselves what are its advantages? We know that it increases the recording capacity to 27 gbytes and that aficionados of the system simply rave about the quality of the picture – especially on viewing Hollywood Blockbusters. In short you get a clear, crisp picture, great theatrical sound and you’re able to up convert DVDs to HD while playing them.
Another great thing about the Blu-ray is that it’s been included on the latest Sony Playstation 3. That means you get to view movies via your Playstation 3 in the Blu-ray format AND play some amazing next generation games. Blu-ray discs are more expensive than regular DVDs, but their quality is an investment into the future. The movies are well worth seeing on Blu-ray, especially the latest, such as James Bond or Mission Impossible. Older films though, unless completely re-mastered, will only look at little better than their original format.
If a Blu-ray movie was produced with HD sound, you’ll find a vast improvement on an average DVD, but if the Blu-ray has only incorporated Dolby or DTS, it’ll only be marginally improved
